ドロボーは、或る意味ハイエナのようなものです。
獲物がその場にあれば、何でもかんでもわが物にしようとするもの。
しかしながら、かつて東京の狭山丘陵に、必要以上のものには手を出さないという、殊勝（しゅしょう）な心掛けのドロボーがいました。
Thieves are like hyenas in some ways.
They will take whatever they can get their hands on, as long as the prey is there.
However, there was once a thief in the Sayama Hills of Tokyo who had an auspicious attitude of not taking more than he needed.

食べ物だけを頂戴した、控え目なクマ男ドロボー（A modest bear man thief who stole only food）

そのドロボーとは、千葉県生まれのS（25歳）です。
彼は、高校を卒業後、しばらくアルバイト生活を送っていましたが、職場での人間関係が鬱陶（うっとう）しくなり、山の生活を決意。この地へ引っ越ししてきました。
That thief is S. (25 years old), born in Chiba Prefecture.
After graduating from high school, he worked part-time job for a while, but became depressed with his relationships at work and decided to live on a mountainside. He decided to move to this area.

その結果、鬱陶しさはなくなって自由な生活を謳歌（おうか）できるようにはなりました、
が、何しろ腹は減ります。
そんなとき、彼はやむなく人里に下り、空き巣を働いたり、農作物を荒したりしたのでした。
As a result, the depression was gone and he could enjoy his free life.
However, humans get hungry.
At such times, he had no choice but to go down to the village to commit burglary and raid the crops.

しかし、彼には偉い（？）ところがありました。
それは、彼の狙いは食べ物だけで、他の物には一切手を出さなかったことです。
空き巣に入ったとき、金目の物を盗むチャンスはいくらでもあったと思いますが、それらには一切手をつけなかったのです。
But there was one great(?) thing about him that other thieves did not have.
He only wanted food, and never touched anything else.
When he was burglarized, he had plenty of chances to steal something of value, but he did not touch any of them.

その後、彼は警視庁東村山署に住居侵入容疑（じゅうきょしんにゅうようぎ）で逮捕されましたが、よーく考えてみれば、彼の生活はクマの生活を地でいったようなもの。
人間だけ罰するのはいかがなものでしょう？
He was later arrested by the Higashimurayama police station of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department on charges of breaking and entering.
But if you think about it, his life is just like a bear's life.
Don't you think it is not fair to punish only humans?
